Great looking guitars !!:food-smiley-004:

The finish on the strat is killer.

What are the pickups in the Tele?..at first glance I thought that they were P90's, but I'm sure that I'm wrong.

Also...what/where is S.F. , ON ?

Cheers

Those pickups are G&L Magnetic Field Design high output single coil pickups. I've heard they are hotter and meatier than the standard single coil, not quite raunchy P90.

I love their necks. I've noodled on a Legacy and an ASAT Special. They were just so playable. The only Fender neck that has matched them for me is the Jimmy Vaughan stat.

My guess is Smith's Falls - between Kingston and Ottawa. :smilie_flagge17:

S.F. mystery.

Hey Bubb, I've got a 1991 G&L Comanche I bought back in the late 90's. I have to say in all honesty that out of all the guitars I own, this one has the smoothest, and probably ,*the* best feeling neck of them all. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow and add it to the thread.

Got a S-500 and ASAT Special that have seen a lot of use over the past decade. Build quality on both is excellent and the G&L tremolo unit is light years ahead of the Fender unit(s).

i've tried many of G&L, and was impressed realy, but i could'nt wrap my head around those hugly head-stock and trem assembly. I know they are very good quality, at least the US ones. The korean ones, well, it's jinda like a MIM i guess.

as to Leo's last stand, well, let's say he was'nt involved very long.

....great guitars, overall. i want a ablonde asat.

i have a sunburst legacy. i added a suhr silent backplate system.

its a tone machine, a real pro player.

but, like al3d, i hate the trem system which, to make matters worse, is a proprietary design.

its heavy, clunky, noisy, stiff and aggravating. as well, unless you tighten the arm to the point where it won't move, there is far too much "play".

on the plus side, the tone controls on the legacy are pure genius: a bass cut AND a treble cut. i want this sytem installed on all of my electrics, eventually!

I don't have any issues with the trem in my Legacy...it's blocked.:D

Okay Bubb here you go, my G&L Comanche. BTW it was actually 1996 when I bought this guitar from a guy in Long Island, New York. I agree with what David said about the tone controls. It's nice to have a guitar with controls that don't give you basically either mud or clarity. My PRS also has a tone control that works the same way.

I once owned a G&L Asat that looked just like that one. Oh why oh why did I ever get rid of it?

Kenmac

It's funny you should mention that because I was going to mention in the posting about them but I was in kind of a hurry at the time. The fact that these pickups are true single coil pickups means that the volume is a little lower than what you'd get with a Strat or Tele. They do sound good though and IMO even more Strat-like than a Fender Strat. It also has a unique pickup switching combination where I can choose to have either one, two or all three pickups on at the same time plus I can also adjust whether I want the E, A and D strings to be amplified by a chosen pickup or the G, B and high E strings. It really is a unique guitar and it came out the same year Leo Fender passed away, 1991, so this was probably one of the last lines he was personally overseeing. It really does have the smoothest feeling neck of all my guitars and something you can't see in the photos is the fact that the pickguard is metal. When I first got the guitar I took it to the 12th Fret for a setup and one of the tech guys was impressed by that.

KenMac, I guess we hear absolutely different things.

IMO, the G&L strats don't sound anything like a strat. It's all in the bridge, it's what makes a strat a strat.

Maybe the newer models are that way but this is from 1991 when Leo was still at the helm. Perhaps I'll do a sample recording of it later on.

Here's a pic of mine before it was shipped to me. It is one of the nicest guitars I've ever played. The pick-ups are outstanding, they cut through everything. The plek'd neck is a breeze to play. G&L's are the best value out there, especially on the used market. Where else can get a pro level US made guitar for 600$?

Here's my '97 Legacy with a coil split Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge. This is an extremely rare "Red Swirl" finish on this guitar. I'm not a big fan of Strats but when I tried this guitar it was so much more than any strat I've ever tried before I bought it.

..yup. my legacy has tone for days, as the saying goes, but it sounds more like a strat that has gone to finishing school: polite, well-mannered and just a little bit snooty.

Wow. That's gorgeous. I was eyeing up a black Legacy at my FLGS but they sold it a few days after I first noticed it. Oh well. Next time maybe.

I'm sorry I missed this thread, I was out of town working. Anyway these are the ones I have left. I have found G&L guitars to be very individual, in that no two seem to have the same personality. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii4/GUInessTARS/DadsPictures243_edited.jpg

Here`s mine:
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/358/legacy1sa9.jpg
I got it for my birthday ten years ago, and it`s always in use. To me, it beat the hell out of any Strat I ever played, and I don`t think the whammy is an issue at all. I have managed to adjust it with just the right amount of`loose dangle`, and it NEVER goes out of tune-a sweet, sweet guitar!

P.S. TARBENDER, that is truly a gorgeous Legacy you have there!

...i would own more than one g&l were it not for the awkward trem bridge.

any suggestions on how to keep the arm swinging freely while simultaneously eliminating any play in the up-down movement?

What I did was just experiment with the set screw that holds the arm in until I got it to a tightness that allows the bar to swing freely, but not too loose. It was just a matter of playing around with it until it was the way I liked it, and now when I put the guitar in the case, I just pull the bar out without even touching the set screw. Works for me!

Hey Kenmac, can you explain me why your guitar as that muck switch? Is it for all the half of pick up?

...but definitely not for me, and i have to wonder why. if that set screw isn't in as tight as humanly possible, the amount of play in the arm is positively aggravating.

I wonder if your set screw is different than mine. I've had it set up that way for years and never changed it, and I'm not gonna mess with it to check, but it seems to me there was some kind of teflon bushing of sorts in there. Maybe check with a dealer if you have one in your vicinity. They might have some ideas or suggestions.

It's really a pretty cool switching system and I think other guitar makers should emulate it but then again it might be a little more pricey to do it that way. I'm sure the electronics under the pickguard must look like spaghetti.

...at the moment the guitar is back at the store where it was purchased, for a truss rod inspection, as the truss rod has reached its limit of adjustment, and we suspect a manufacturing defect.

i have asked the store to check the trem arm to see if they can find the source of the problem.

Sounds like you may be missing the little bushing that goes in with the set screw.

you can buy a pack of 6 screws and bushings for $6.00 on the G&L site.

It's been blocked for so long I didn't notice it was gone...guess I'll have to order some myself...want a set or two ?
