I'm considering one or the other for the kids for X-mas and was wondering if any of you would share your impressions and recommendations.
Also there are at least two different PS3 models with 40gig or 80gig drives.
What is the advantage of the additional storage capacity?

40GB has zero backward compatibility with PS2 games.
80GB has 90% backward compatibility with PS2 games.
What do the kids friends have 360 or PS3? You probably want to get the system that their friends have, so they can play against each other and share games.
360 has a better game catalog. PS3 a little more reliable hardware.
I prefer the 360, for the Media Centre capabilities and rumble in the controller. 360s online environment is better and easier to use. My PS3 gets used as a Blue Ray player exclusively.
I have a 360 and so do most of the folks I know. The couple of people that do own PS3s wish they had gone for 360. The games cataloge is great and XBOX Live is awesome if multiplayer is your thing. PS3 does play Blu Ray discs if that matters to you. I,ve never had an issue with the 360s reliability.

Thanks for the information guys.
I must confess I know very little about this stuff. Blue Ray is basically a hi def format is it not?
If so, that's not really what I would be looking for. Actually the kids expressed an interest in Wii but the manufacturer seem to have grossly miscalculated the demand and there's none on the shelves.
Seems like a serious blunder on someone's part.
Anyone else?

Blu-Ray is a disc format that can hold 25 GB (50 if you get a dual layer of course). It's more common for HD content at the moment but you can buy blank ones as well, atleast I'm pretty sure the sell 'em now.
Personally I'm a PC gamer but of the two consoles I'd vote Xbox 360. I had a 360 earlier this year... modded it, played it for a couple weeks and sold it. Controllers are weird. Forever live the mouse and keyboard!

Yeah the kids also like PC gaming, but having platforms we can run on the TV is more of a family activity. I tend to always be two or three grnerations behind the latest game platforms. I have no desire or interest to have the latest thing, particularly considering that the latest thing ends up costing considerably less the year AFTER it's the latest thing.
I think Xbox 360 will be the one. I likely won't end up using it much. I don't know whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, but I really don't have much time for games.

Thanks for the feedback folks.
I picked up the Xbox360 with the hard drive package just a few minutes ago.
Too bad Nintendo fracked up their forecasting so badly. They have lost opportunities that will never be regained. I'll bet someone's head is on a platter for this. Spinning it in a positive light by thinking they're creating demand by making it hard to get is naive at best.
I spoke to three other shoppers in line with me who would have bought Wii if they were available. Once a year at the very most is really as often as most people are willing to buy a new platform. You snooze, you lose. Xbox 360 and PS3 are reaping the benefits of this mistake.

It seems these game companies always have some gimic this time of year. Whether it's a new console, new game, there always seems to be short supply and it always makes the news.
Case in point.....check this out

How rich and how crazy do you have to be to fork out that kind of scratch for an Xmas gift. More money than brains I guess.
Merry Christmas Everyone.

So, wait until January and get a Wii..... Sounds like yer whole family would be happier that way.
*edit... or here's what I'd do.... Buy the Xbox360 and a game or two, so that the kidlets have sommat to open On The Day.... But I'd make sure that I kept my receipt (90 day Return)... In January, when the Wii is back on the shelves, I'd ask the kids.... "Do you wanna keep the Xbox360 and the couple of games, or do we return it, buy a Wii and a whole BUNCH of games???" (Isn't the Wii WAY cheaper than either the 360 or the PS3??)
Realizing of course that there's only, as the Muppets sing, One More Sleep Till Christmas....

The only problem is you can't return the games once open...
The Wii is a $100 dollars cheaper. You don't get a whole lot for that $100 cheaper, IMO. I owned one for a couple months, got real bored of it in a hurry. Wii is the buzz word this holiday season nothing more and parents are falling for it hook line an sinker.
Depending on the age of your kids they might get more use out of a 360, plus it has some cool features you might use. ie) Movie rentals, upconverting DVD player, Media Center Extender.

Games, once opened go to EB Games for trade-in....
"I owned one for a couple months, got real bored of it in a hurry."
That, against the dozens and dozens of people I know who have them and love them.... Maybe it's just not yer kid of console.... Nothing appeals to absolutely everyone...
"Depending on the age of your kids"
Age has nothing to do with it... I know LOTS of adults who LOVE their Wii.... (Which, you want to be careful of saying in public.... Lest you be taken for a water-sport fan! LOL)

Anyone I know that own either the 360 or PS3 and the Wii, never use the Wii any more. I guess it's relative.

Well i have a PS 3 and wish I had the XBOX
There's just aren't enough games out there for it. They seem to be really slow on the draw.
On the positive side most of my PS 2 collection is backwards compatable.

The kids are digging the $hit out of the 360.
They want to play live. I have wireless internet in the house. Is there a wireless ethernet card available for this game system?
Saw one yesterday at Zellers, I believe it was $120. The 360 has been a hit here with the family since they opened it this morning, my sons GH3 is getting some major usage!!:rockon2::smilie_flagge17:

The Microsoft one is on sale right now. $79 Jump on it. If your closest future shop doesn't have one, Best Buy should price match.

Can I play Xbox games on my Xbox 360?
I sprung for the high end model of the Xbox 360 and there are a lot of games for Xbox that look interesting.
So?
Anyone?

Yeah I believe you can play the original Xbox games. There might be a compatability list somewhere... 1 second...
